Unfortunate incident of suicide in MANIT

A second year Engg student, Rahul, committed suicide on Nov 15, 2008. I am posting the mails I got on the same as well as various news links/blog links about the incident.
To say the least, it is a very unfortunate incident, for such a young soul to give up on life.
I think the issue might get politicized and the true cause lost in chaos. there are two theories doing rounds.
one - the student was allegedly involved in ragging, accusation denied students.
two -  the student was against the political nexus in the college and was victimized because of the same.

I for one am not sure of the truth, I have seen truth being distorted beyond comprehension for the gain of a few.

Mail from MANIT Student

Respected sir,

I am a student of Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology Bhopal (NIT-B). As a student of this college I would like you take some action against the wrongdoers here.

Today a friend of mine namely Rahul Pathak (2nd year, Branch-Bio Informatics, Scholar no. - 071104117) committed suicide. The reason for this was the mental harassment that he was subjected to by the director and the various administrators of this college the name of whom I am enclosing along with this letter. This is not the first time that a student has been exposed to such devious methods and technologies and this would probably not be the last time that some one is forced to take such a course of action if no action is taken against the people who have done this. This originally started as a minor complaint logged against some of the students of 2nd year about a month back and some action was taken against them. The students concerned apologized and the whole matter did not crop up till a day before our end semester examinations. The students concerned were barred from writing the examination and even though they pleaded there case and even begged for forgiveness the director and the administrators still did not see it fit to forgive them. Instead they tortured and harassed them and even went to the extent of physically abusing. They did all this and to an extent in the name of petty politics to get the students to do their biddings. Not being satisfied with all that they did do the director even called up Rahul Pathak’s parents and verbally abused them using slang words. This was the final draw of the straw which depressed the victim completely and is the main reason for what has happened today. This is not how a director or any administrator should act but I can tell you that they have a past record of regularly misbehaving and abusing students and using them as mere pawns to do their bidding. Along with this there is a lot of political strings that are being pulled by some bullies here and I would like you to investigate in that regard also. I hope that my voice would be heard by you and would lead to some action.

Input from one of the student..

Hello sir ..

I am not too sure abt things being blown out of proportion .. yea it does happen here and there in that article too .. but i guess that article in Dainik Bhaskar is just the tip of the iceberg .. There are a lot more things happening in the college i suppose .. though i have no idea how the college was in the past, making out from what my seniors say, i can make out that inspite of director pandey sir 's efforts, the college is on a downward spiral ..

Quoting a humanities department faculty who came to my class .. "In the last three or four years, the college has been on a continuous downward spiral" .. These were the exact words spoken.. putting it as told .. "speaking with the director is like a monologue .. Only he speaks .. he never takes others' views into account" .. I am not sure how much of this is really true ..

"As per report, Institute is one of the best example in Appointments of RELATIVES ( around 50 member of a family) . "
Sorry to say that this is true i suppose .. the paper has quoted with a lot of examples even .. The teaching standards have become really low .. Quality of the teachers is really really low these days .. Not really NIT standard I suppose .. (Though this could be because of the tremendous influx of contract faculty with minimal experience) ..

Recently there was a lot of controversy when Dr.Sushil Mittal sir resigned on the stage during the oathtaking ceremony from his post of Dean - Student Affairs just because no civil dept student found a place in the student council ... Things I can tell you are quite bad in our college ..

I can tell u that i agree with Dr.R.K.Patra sir (ex-faculty MANIT) that a total overhaul of the faculty is required ..
Input i.e. student - fortunately students' quality in MANIT are the best. They needs proper guidance.
Guidance only possible, if the teacher is competent.(2) The process i.e. teacher. You know better the
quality of teacher reigning in MANIT. Except politics and politics, most of the teachers are having no
market value. They want to save their skins by doing all the nuisance activities. .. As a current student,I can tell you that this is totally 100% true .. Half the contract faculty hardly know the stuff required .. Highly incompetent is the least i can tell ( though with a heavy heart) .. They lack in communication with the students ..

(3) Output i.e. placement. The students are getting placement by their own merit, and what I feel,
Institutes contribution is almost nil, except inviting some good companies. You know that NIT
students are the cream, and selected corporates prefer to visit campus.Since I was associated in placement, most of the
corporates feedback was surprising. We have the best infrastructure, but most of the faculties does not know to use and guide the students. The most important thing is is the root cause of collapse of MANIT machinery is involvement of self-interest of few so-called alumni in the administration. They know the weak points of Director, faculty and encashing the same by influencing their power.

The first part of this is true i suppose .. N i have absolutely no idea abt the later part ..

Hoping and waiting in earnest for the improvement in the state of our institution ...

Whatever is going on had been going on it past too.Only reason was that we all were too busy to take care of that,And this has made what our college is today. So we all are responsible for our Chlata hai Attitude of that time.Had we stood up at that time, this situation would not have come.

Now when MANIT is having a chance to become IIT, these thing have surfaced (pretty amazing timing). And all the IT ppl had jumped in to give their valuable(?) thoughts on the topic(lot of time ..huh )
Don't u think these all things woulf hardly make any difference on grass rrot level rather than negative publicity of our college.Which would definitely hamper the prospect og MANIT becoming an IIT.
My only suggestion is to go and act don't just be a part of mob in mud slinging.
This is result of what u have done(rather what u have not done by not standing against at that time). So we should be shameful rather than feeling proud.
