Some Introspection required

MANIT or MACT as we knew it, has a long culture of corruption. It has been a Bimaru college for a long time. I am sure this will ruffle quite a few feathers, and I will get brickbats too, but for a change let’s try introspection and see all the issues in proper perspective.

1. Ragging -> I am not sure what is the current status of the same, but MACT used to be famous for one of the worst ragging. Ragging has been justified by saying "it builds camaraderie", "makes people smart", "makes you tough to last in a tough city like Bhopal" etc.. etc.. . Have we ever thought why colleges like NIT Trichy, Suratkhal etc.. manage the same without physical ragging. Why do these students have more exposure, are more apt to fit into industry, have more number of entrepreneurs.

2. Co-operative mess -> This is the first taste of corruption and power a student gets. It is an open secret that Mess Committee has a ball for a month that they are in power, from getting special treatment to earning kickbacks. Once the tenure is over the other Mess committees try to outdo the previous ones. The amounts involved are substantial for student life.

3. Panga Culture -> I don't know when this started, but apparently MACT has a 'name' to preserve in Bhopal, MACT has always been involved in acts of vandalism, just do a query on police cases against MACT students and you will find a long list of offenders. But more often than not there is no conviction. Bhopal lives on out of court compromises. But why do students get involved. Answer is very simple yet very disturbing "They don't know better".
The rush of living on the edge, being the Boss, Don, having a whole group of buddies at your beck and call to rampage any part of the city, feels good initially. But these students fade out very quickly, if not for the support of outside elements.
Recently these guys are being taken care of, their cases fought in court, getting lenient treatment from local lawmen, all thanks to nexus of college politics. As a result more and more students fall for this dark side.
Tales of famous goons are passed on from one batch to another as if it is something to be proud of.

4. Ineffective Faculty -> Present Faculty in MANIT is no good. this is part of a bigger problem nationwide, where teaching is not considered a lucrative career anymore by the best brains. In today's context when educational institutes are moving towards offering consultancy, filing IPRs, contributing to community with the research on low cost solutions, MANIT is a dumping ground for central funds. No progress is being made whatsoever on academic front. Making more buildings, computer centers, libraries, labs is not going to help, if you have no one to utilize them properly.

Inspite of all this, majority of students do well in their lives, but the point to note here is that MANIT does get the cream, when it comes to brains. But a lot of these ex-MACTians are left with a bitter taste when it comes to college. And hence the reason for not having an active Alumni.

Solution to all this is fairly complex and long haul, because what we are aiming at is overhaul of the complete system. Taking out someone who is the perpetrator now, is not going to make a difference in long run. I am listing down a few points that need to be considered.

1. Fight the immediate menace with a mix of RTI and PIL

2. Have networked alumni with stake holders from student/faculty/Alumni. It is easy to sit back and pass comments, but very different to actually do something towards making our institute a better place

3. Involvement of Alumni in Mentor programs for present students. Accomplished alumni members should be tapped to guide and counsel students towards career goals, lectures on the advances in present technology and what is required in the industry would also help

4. Make faculty accountable and administration transparent, goals should be set for research projects and the same should be appraised based on results. A special focus on industry-institute relationship is need of the hour.

Another thing to add here, I don't think our college needs financial assistance, what we need is people who care about the college and are willing to do "shram daan" to bring it on course. It would be a long drawn battle, but as Alumni are we geared up to make a change?

Hi, m a final yr Girl frm MANIT. m readin d posts frm last 2 days n felt 4 d 1st time dat v r not jus interested in calculatin drawbacks but also want 2 suggess some concrete solution which will b certainly needed in long run. well after d suggestion, wat v need is implementation of these ideas. sir, i wud like 2 commit here dat my views regardin d changes r not very diff frm u, but as m studin here so i can realise dem properly, (like d solutions r practical or not).
1st of all, a little discussion of d problems which r mentioned in dis post.

1.Ragging n panga culture is almost gone(thanx 2 director 4 very few gud works in coll!)

2.Little corruption is dere in Boy's mess but it can b solved by d students only.dere sincerity n dere involvements in it.I guess no such corrution is dere in gals mess at students level atleast.

3.Ineffective faculty members r still dere(finally i found 1 gud faculty in my dept in final yr). Its a serious prob n its not jus d prob of MANIT, Its d prob of our country as v young professionls r not very interested in teachin or sometimes v avoid it becoz of d politics(few other factors also) involved in dis field.

4. One very severe prob, which u forgot 2 discuss is d inertness of students towards learnin. It might b becoz after facin d inefficient faculty for 1 yr, v stop tryin 2 learn or watever frm 2nd yr onwards. Its a serious prob n v cant jus leave it dat unless d new eligible faculty members will b recruited v'll let d students go dis way(i hope few of u might b knwin d comment what Analog devices made wen dey came 2 our coll 4 recruitment).
well few of us frm final yr r tryin 2 creat n environment in coll 2 creat d interest towards new technologies,Roborics, small projects frm 2nd yr n it'll lead 2 research work(on new technologies n d existin technical probs).I'll b discussin it later in details.

5.One more prob which i wud like 2 discuss here is less interaction between teachers n faculty members n no interest of teachers in learnin frm students sometimes. Dere is a gap of decades(minimum 3-4 decades between d generation of students n teachers). So its very natural dat teacher won b able 2 cope up with d young, vibrant students who r full of energy n creativity. M also workin in dis field on as soon as i'll implemet d plan i'll b discussin with all of u. n d only interfere in dis case will b frm few egoistic teachers.Even if u r quite knowledgeable u'll hav 2 put sinificant effort 2 understan d requiement of present senario n d expectation of students frm u n d subject.

Well, i m really happy dat our Aluminies r still concerned abt our college n workin on d probs seriously n also thankfull 2 few teachers who still hav not lost d hope in students n d coll.V seriously need your help(alumini as well as prof.) in bringin some revolutionary changes in administration n recruitment processes n all.V'r ready 2 b with u in ny action u plan regardin it.On others probs v'll b workin our own(students).V'll jus need ur guidance (n financial support sometimes in some research works n projects which v'll b discussin later)
M thankfull 2 all of u.Thanx a lot.

the nore things change the more they stay the same. all the points mentioned above still remain though may be decreasing in magnitude with the exception of one
some days back a few students were involved in a fight nearby at the behest and urging of some faculty and their acolytes who had picked up a fight in a liquor shop in the fight these aforesaid failed to turn up .the end result is that four students are facing an attempt to murder charge and facing a min of 10 years in prison while the instigators and the supporting faculty have skunked away
is there no justice?
P.S. If i may be so bold to venture girls seldom come to know what happens in the college closeted as they are therefore they should refrain from commenting on things they have no knowledge of
